He was a lifelong rancher and served as a Starr County Commissioner for over 25 years. He enjoyed hunting, politics, spending time at the ranch, and being surrounded by his family.
He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was decorated with 3 combat stars. He was active in many organizations and had served as President of the South Texas Judges and Commissioners Association, Director of the National Association of Counties, Honorary Director of the National Cattlemen's Association and as a director of the First State Bank of Premont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margarita Montalvo Alaniz, his daughter, Rebecca Isabel Alaniz, his brothers, Rene, Romeo, Roberto and Jose Rubio Alaniz and his sisters, Benita Alaniz and Canuta Montalvo.
He is survived by his daughters, Rosa del Carmen Richie (Herbert), Blanca A. Rodriguez, Reynaldo Martin Alaniz (Sylvia), and Eduardo Marcelino Alaniz (Terry). He is also survived by his grandchildren whom he adored Judith Christina Rodriguez Sakai (George), Thomas Eduardo Rodriguez, Alyssa Rose Richie, Daniel Rey Alaniz, Rebecca Elaina Alaniz, Amanda Nicole Richie, Edward Rey Alaniz and Christina Isabel Alaniz. He is also survived by his brother Rolando Alaniz (Evelyn), Julieta Montalvo (Alberto) and Irma Pena and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing was held at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission on Wednesday August 14 from 1 pm to 9 pm with a rosary at 7 pm. Funeral procession will depart from Ric Brown Family Funeral Home at 8:30 am with a funeral mass officiated by Father Roy Snipes at San Isidro Catholic Church at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at Montalvo Cemetery.
