HUGH L. COLE DEAD

Well Known Investigator Who Conducted the Investigation of the Tweed Ring for the City.

Hugh L. Cole, senior member of the law firm of Cole & Potter, of Nos. 63 and 65 Wall street, died at his summer home in Southhampton, L. I., yesterday from heart failure.

Mr. Cole was born in New Berne, NC, in 1838, and graduated from Princeton College in 1859. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Cole sided with the South and entered the Confederate army. He was on the staff of General Davis, and when the war ended had the rank of major. He practiced law in Mobile, Ala., and in 1869 came to New York.

He was appointed Assistant Corporation Cousel, and conducted the investigation of the Twee ring on behalf of the city, and it was mostly through his efforts that the evidence against Twee was obtained, and he succeeded in having much of the money taken fraudulently from the city returned.

Mr. Cole had no children. His wife was a Miss Helen Ellis, who survives him. Mr. Cole was prominent in club life, having membership in the Union, University, Princeton, Riding, Southern Society and Confederates' Union.
