Irene Elizabeth Rust, 87, Fargo, North Dakota, died on August 14, 2013 in Sanford Hospital Palliative Care. She was born June 8, 1926 to Albert and Emily (Hendrickx) Kasowski of rural Mapleton and grew up with seven sisters and two brothers. Irene graduated from Mapleton High School and then attended Teacher's College in Valley City. She taught at rural schools in Cass County.

Irene met Duane Rust while teaching in Prosper, North Dakota. They were married on September 16, 1947. Irene and Duane farmed in the Prosper area and raised twelve children. They were members of St. Mary's Cathedral and in later years, Holy Spirit in Fargo, North Dakota. Irene enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, crocheting and knitting, attending Homemaker's Club, and volunteering with the St. John's Ladies' Auxiliary. She was devoted to her husband and family. Following retirement, Duane and Irene lived in Park Rapids, MN, but eventually moved to Fargo.

Irene is survived by her twelve children: Dennis (Vicki) Rust, Jeanne Rust (Chris McGrath), Sheila (Stener) Anderson, Greg (Lyann) Rust, Julie (Frank) Depute, Brenden (Cyndi) Rust, Brad (MaryJo) Rust, John Rust, Elizabeth (Todd) Jonas, Patricia (Joe) Roth, Mary (Tim) Harms, and Kate (Kent) Rockstad. She had 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Irene is survived by her sisters, Martha (Bruno) Seppi and Rita Anderson, her brother, Frank (Ruth) Kasowski, and her sisters-in-law, Shirley Kasowski and Gladys Rust.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Duane, and her siblings: Mary Holzer, Beatrice Radzak, Agnes Bradish, Bernadette Radzak, John Kasowski, and Theresa Hanson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of the Fargo Public Library and the Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society.

9-10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo.
