Born in Pennsylvania. The family moved to Wellsville, New York where she met and married Simeon Mongomery Thorp in 1859. Simeon moved the family to Lawrence, Kansas where he was appointed Superintendent of public instruction. He was later elected a State Senator. After her husband was killed in 1863 during Quantrill's raid, she moved back to Wellsville with her infant daughter, Gertrude Fassett Thorp. In 1870, she married Andrew Jackson Hatch.
