Montgomery Thorp was an early settler of the Short Tract, New York where he met and married Bethiah Jones, daughter of patriot John C. Jones, patriot and founder of Short Tract. Together they raised 10 children, including 3 sons of distinction. Simeon Montgomery, prominent "Free Stater" and union man who became superintendent of public instruction of Kansas and later a state Senator. He was murdered in Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence, Kansas. Alexander Kelsey Thorp, who was a Captain of the NY 1st Dragoons and was killed in the battle of Winchester. The third son, Thomas Jones Thorp, had just graduated from Union College when the war broke out. He organized and led the 85th Regiment of New York. He retired as a Major General in Oregon. He erected the Montgomery Monument in Short Tract Cemetery in honor of his family and the other fallen patriots of Short Tract.
