Kenneth Richard Briggs, 77, of Lone Oak passed away Aug. 12, 2013, at home with his wife by his side. He had fought a long, valiant battle against cancer and Parkinson's disease. "Rest now, cutie. Your long, hard battle is over. I love you."

A memorial service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Danny Calk.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born in the Lone Oak area to parents Dail and Rosa Cook Briggs. He attended Donelton and Lone Oak schools but could not wait to get to Dallas.

In Dallas, he worked for Central Freight Lines and E-Systems. He started his own company, Ken Briggs Painting Contractor in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

It was a successful business until he retired in 2008.

He married JoLynn Kuecker in Brenham on Nov. 24, 1984. They moved to Lone Oak in 2009 and became involved in the city.

Kenneth served as a City Council member for one term and as mayor for one term. He was a member of the Lone Oak United Methodist Church and also the Lone Oak Civic Club.

He was also a member of the Coffee Club at the Short Stop, and they met at least once daily.

He was an avid golfer, which became a true passion for him, playing sometimes five days per week. He was pretty good at it, getting two holes-in-one.

He is survived by his wife, JoLynn; son and daughter-in-law Ken and Susan Briggs of Flower Mound; his in-laws, Henry and Blondean Kuecker of Brenham; his sister-in-law, Tracy McNicole and husband Toney of Caldwell; his granddaughters, Megan Allard and husband Gregg of Frisco and Michaela Harvot and husband Danny of Roanoke; and great-granddaughter Harper Allard of Frisco.

His parents and sister Christine Briggs Pursel preceded him in death.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Meera Shreedhara of Texas-Oncology and Odyssey Hospice for their compassion and care.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
