He was the son of Byrd Beauford and Martha Free. "Lem" owned several mills as well as a cotton gin, corn mill, shingle mill, and a country store. He lost a hand in one of the cotton gins where he worked. He was a member of Troy Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
