Leo Applegate married Catherine Mauck on February 4, 1866 in Harrison County, Indiana. They were listed together in 1870 in Harrison County with young daughters Alice & Sallie, who were not listed in 1880. The 1880 Harrison County, Indiana census shows them with Charlie, age 9; Nancy E., age 5; James N., age 3; and Annie, age 9 months.

This family was listed on the 1895 Kansas State census in Coffey County. The 1900 Coffey County census shows Leo and Catherine with Anna L., age 20 and Oscar C., age 18. Catherine was listed as the mother of 8 with 4 living. Catherine was listed with Leo in 1910, but by 1915 Leo was listed alone, age 70. He was shown with his son Oscar in 1925 & 1930.

Leo Applegate appears in a 1962 survey of veterans buried in the Strawn Cemetery. His dates are recorded as 1844-1933, with the notation that he served in Co. C, 66th Indiana Infantry. Civil War records show that he enlisted in Co. C, 66th Indiana Infantry 19 Aug 1862 and mustered out 3 June 1865 at Washington, D. C. In addition, the 1895, 1905, and 1915 Kansas State census reports all list his service in Co. C., 66th Indiana Infantry.

Ancestry.com family trees record his death in 1934. His parents are listed as Levi & Nancy A. (nee Graham) Applegate.

Graves from an early Strawn Cemetery may have been relocated to the cemetery at Jacob's Landing, now called Strawn Cemetery. The cemetery at Jacob's Landing was called the Kite Cemetery at one time. (information from a Coffey County Findagrave volunteer)

Leo was a son of Levi & Nancy Graham Applegate, who married in Harrison County, Indiana 7 Feb 1841. This marriage is recorded in the Indiana Marriage Index. "Lee" was listed as age 7 on the 1850 Harrison County, Indiana census with his parents and siblings.

Leo & Catherine's son, James N. Applegate, died in 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Anna L. (nee Applegate) McMullen died in 1946, also in Los Angeles. (California Death Index)

Mrs. C. J. Garrett published a list of veterans buried in Coffey County, Kansas in 1962. C. J. Garrett, Minnie & Rebecca Lyman, & Mrs. Marie Kesner helped with this project. There is the notation that the Strawn Cemetery was to be relocated.
