Luis Sr., a resident of Cordova, passed away peacefully on in his Albuquerque residence with his wife and children by his side. He was predeceased by parents Marcelino Montoya and Leonires Romero-Montoya.

Luis was survived by his wife of 67 years Candelaria Montoya. He was extremely proud of his sons: Eddie Montoya and Luis "Lito" Montoya Jr.; and daughters: Lena Lucero, Kathy M. Trujillo and Dessie Montoya-Soto.; grandchildren, Marvin Montoya, Eli Velarde, James Montoya, Victor Montoya, Adam Trujillo, Lynette Lucero, LeAnn Lucero, Lawrence Lucero, Richard Trujillo, Luis Miguel Soto; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. Luis was also survived by son-in-law Richard Trujillo; daughter-in-law Rosella Montoya; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Luis was a retired postmaster in Cordova. He was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo where he participated as a Eucharistic Minister, Christian Living Group member, Men's Cursio member and in local Prison Ministries. He was the last surviving member of the Montoya-Romero family. Luis was a decorated World War II Veteran who served in the US Army and was posted in Italy. Upon return to the United States, he married his wife Candelaria Martinez.

A Rosary was recited on August 12, 2013 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Mass of Christian burial was on August 13, 2013 also at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial followed in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Family and friends were invited to join the Montoya family for a reception honoring Luis R. Montoya, Sr. at the Lodge in Santa Fe Hotel.
