Enlisted with the 25th Georgia Infantry, Company F "Altamaha Scouts", on 14 August 1861 and served until June 30, 1862.
Enlisted in Company K, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on May 3, 1863. He participated in the Atlanta Campaign, Noonday Church, and Kennesaw Mountain.
He succumbed to acute dysentery and pneumonia while a patient in one of the Confederate field hospitals. He left behind a widow and six children. After Kirkpatrick's Foragers burned the family's small log cabin on Doctor's Creek, they survived the severe winter of 1865 by living in a pine bark hut.
