Charles grew up on a farm, but graduated from college and became an ordained Christian (Disciples of Christ) minister. Realizing that such a job meant struggling to survive, he went to work for the Boy Scouts of America organizing Boy Scout Troops in prairie railroad towns for several years. He then became a journalist, working for some time in Osawatomie, Kansas. He wrote "A Town Between Two Rivers, 1854-1954." Osawatomie, KS: Osage Valley Centennial, 1954. He later moved to Cassville, Missouri where he worked in semi-retirement for the local newspaper.
