Helen Mae Mikkelson was born February 5, 1924 to Vincent and Mary (Spindler) Kubicek on the family farm in Blackwater Township in rural Garrison, ND. She attended O'Shea School #2, graduating 8th grade in 1937. Helen then stayed home to help on the family farm.
On January 2, 1943, Helen married Lawrence Mikkelson at Washburn, ND. They lived in various places until settling in Garrison, ND with their family of 6 children. Helen began working in the laundry department of Garrison Memorial Hospital, where she worked for 12 years. Because of health problems, in 2004 Helen moved into the 3rd floor at Garrison Memorial Hospital.
Helen enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, crocheting, sewing, playing cards and spending time with family.
Helen is survived by her sons, Larry (Diane) Mikkelson, Gary (Bev) Mikkelson, Randy (Connie) Mikkelson, all of Garrison; daughters, Linda Schlenker, Hazen, ND, Karen (John) Eisen, Cheyenne, WY; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchildren; sisters Angie Christopherson, Minot, ND, Rosie Proell, Garrison, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence, daughter, Kay Frances, sisters, Dorothy Bruhn, Frances Kurtz, and Elbina Hopkins.
