Avery is survived by his wife of 48 years, Wanda Jolly Thornsburg; three sons: Timmy Thornsburg of Carlisle, Brian (Deana) Thornsburg, and Derek (Mellisa) Thornsburg, both of Moorefield; three grandchildren Colton & Austin Thornsburg of Moorefield, and Clayton Thornsburg of Carlisle; two step-grandchildren: Christopher Hagen and Harley Bates of Moorefield; two brothers: Hershel (Irene) Thornsburg of Bethel, and Walter (Karen) Thornsburg of Moorefield; his mother-in-law, Margaret Jolly of Paris, and several brothers and sisters in laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Calvin "Cowboy" Thornsburg, one sister, Nora McIntyre; two half sisters; Nannie Mae Purcell, and Rosa Brown.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Clark Funeral Home in Moorefield by Brother Jim Caswell. Burial followed in the Elizaville Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Darvin Mitchell, Doug McCord, Steve Hamilton, Jeff "Pooh-Bear" Farrow, Larry Smith, and Everett House. Honorary pallbearers were Kenny Lyons, Charles Clark, Marion Livingood, Chester Sparks, and John Crowe.
