John Swain Cullins was the first child and son of John William Cullins and Mary Ann Sims. John Swain Cullins moved with his parents to Independence Co., AR at a very young age, shortly thereafter his mother died after the birth of his brother William Sims Cullins. In Oct, 1856, his father remarried again. He had four half brothers and sisters with this union. Again, his father remarried in 1868, having 2 half sisters.

Biography of John S. Cullins

John Swain Cullins was born 30 Jul 1852 in TN to the parents of Capt. John W. Cullins and Mary A. Sims. He also went by the names of J. S. and "Cass" which is believed to have been a nickname. His middle name is his grandmother's maiden name. He had one other sibling by these parents named William Sims Cullins who was born in 1855 also in TN. He had six other half brothers and sisters by different mothers. By the mother named Mary A. Stark, three half-brothers Henry Neill Cullins, James A. Cullins and Francis Cullins and one-half sister Estella Cullins. By the mother Martha M. Flinn, two half-sisters Theodora and Ida Cullins.

John S. Cullins made his home in Greenbriar Twp., Independence Co., AR with his parents when they moved to the area. On 2 Apr 1856, his mother Mary A. (Sims) Cullins died and was born in Independence Co., AR. John's father was a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Greenbriar Twp., Independence Co., purchased his present farm of 320 acres, which is situated near Jamestown, in 1855; there was at that time little improvement on the land, which is now one of the best farms in the county. He devoted his entire attention to farming until 1867, when he built a store on the present site of Jamestown, and for twelve years engaged in merchandising in partnership with Jacob Pate. Capt. John W. Cullins accumulated considerable property, owning in all 540 acres, about 220 acres of which are under cultivation, beside real estate in Jamestown. During the Civil War Capt. John W. Cullins served about four years in the Confederate Army; the first year as captain of Company C, Desha's battalion, operating in Alabama and Mississippi, and subsequently assisted in organizing Company C, AR Calvary, of which he was appointed captain, in which capacity he served until the close of the struggle. He was in the battles of Marks' Hill, Big Blue, with Gen. Price on his raid through MO and Kansas, surrendering at Jacksonport in June, 1865, after four years of the hardships of war. To this union four children were born. Maud died on 24 Sep 1950 in Wetumka, Hughes Co., OK.
