He was born January 2, 1922 in Greenfield. He was the son of George H. Leary and Lydia Layne Owens.
He married Margery J. Cross May 2, 1943 in Greenfield. She survives in Fortville.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John R Leary Jr. and George P. Leary, both of Fortville; a sister, Betty E. King of Pennington Gap, Virginia; and four grandchildren.
Burial will be in Gravel Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Hughes Funeral Home, Fisher-McCarty Chapel in Fortville.
