1880 census says he was five at the time. Census was dated June 5, 1880.

Groton Avery Clan, p.1089, gives his birthdate as Jun 2,1876.

Groton Avery Clan, p.1379 indicates he married Harriet Amelia "Hattie" Avery (whether she was related or not is unknown) on Sep 8,1895 at Atlanta. (Vital Recs say they were married in 1896) If he were born in 1880, this would have been shortly after his 15th birthday. Further, there were two children born of this marriage, Amelia in 1897 (when he would have been 17 if he was born in 1880) and Marian in 1905. He is aged 24 in the 1900 census in Washington,DC, again suggesting he was born c1876.
