8 Aug 1921: Edward R. Kohr, one of the foremost citizens of the North Side, and distinguished as one of the citizens responsible for the development of the Fifth Ward, died very suddenly, Sunday noon, at his home at 406 North Fourth Street. He had been in failing health for some months, and his malady was diagnosed as hardening of the arteries. He was able to be about as usual, however, until a week ago, when he took to his bed. The malady was not considered serious, however, and his recovery was looked for when on Sunday he suddenly expired. Mr. Kohr was born and raised in the Monroe Valley, in the northern section of the county. He was raised on the farm, but early in life accepted a clerkship in Phillips' store, a well known commercial enterprise in those days, and he remained there for a long period of years. He came to Lebanon upward of thirty-five years ago. He was variously engaged since then, but spent some years as a salesman for George Freshley, the Seventh Street coal dealer. While thus engaged, he also dabbled for a time in real estate, and then started to build homes. He built several hundred homes, mostly in the Fifth Ward, selling them as they were completed, and investing in new ventures of the same kind immediately, At the time of his death, he still possessed a considerable number of houses, and the number has been placed as high as thirty-five by some of his intimate friends. As a result of his enterprise, he was widely known in the Fifth Ward and was held in highest esteem by the people in that region particularly and by the citizens at large. He was identified with the membership of Trinity Lutheran Church, and was an ardent supporter of the congregational ventures and general work when his health was such as to permit of such activity. He was aged 71 years, 10 months and 17 days. Mrs. Kohr, who before her marriage was Molly Boeshore, died in February, 1919. The husband leaves nine children as follows: Charles B. Kohr, 412 North Fourth Street; Robert B. Kohr, 924 Lehman Street; Isabella, wife of Theodore Jones, Roselle, N. Y.; Mayme, wife of David Siegfried, at present at home; Sarah, wife of Roland Davis, 102 Lehman Street; Estelle, wife of Luther Speicher, 100. 1-2 Lehman Street; Jennie, wife of John D. Long, 120 Mifflin Street; Lillian, wife of John Sheffy, 54 Lehman Street; and Miss Clara B. Kohr, at home. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. [Lebanon Daily News]
