He was the son of Noah Elmon and Flora Mae (Colbert) Eakes and married Thelma Ruth Dennis. His obituary follows:

Columbus L. Eakes, 72, a resident of Corder's Crossroads, and a former employee of CFW and a farmer, died Saturday, (January 22, 1994) at his residence. Son of the late Noah Elmon and Flora Colbert Eakes, he was a native of Madison County, Alabama. Mr. Eakes is survived by his wife, Thelma Ruth Dennis Eakes; 11 children, Linda Faye Bailey of New Orleans, Louisiana, Mary Jo Clark of Frankewing, Geraldine Young of New Orleans, Diane Sells of Corder's Crossroads, Tammy Williams of Kirkland, Columbus Leon Eakes of Fayetteville, David Eakes of Murfreesboro, Dwight Eakes of Hazel Green, Alabama, Jeff Eakes of Flintville, Larry Eakes of Corder's Crossroads, and Danny Eakes of Fayetteville; a brother, Fred Eakes of Fayetteville; 28 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held yesterday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Swafford officiating. Interment followed in Plainview Cemetery. Higgins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
