Russell (Ben) Hersberger, of Mt. Auburn, who was born Easter Sunday, March 31, 1929 passed away at Reid Memorial Hospital on December 19, with his family by his side.
Ben was born in Lapel, Indiana, son of Guy and Ressie (Martin) Hersberger. He and his wife, Patty enjoyed 60 years of marriage, having been married on February 29, 1952. His children are son Jim (Lynn)Hersberger of Fort Wayne, daughter, Julie of Greensboro, North Carolina, and daughter Emily (Leo) Turchyn of Batesville. He raised his nieces Constance Criss of Indianapolis and Catherine Criss Fisher of Greenwood. He leaves his beloved grandchildren, Stephen (Stefanie) Turchyn of Indianapolis, Jim (Windy) Turchyn of Urbana, Illinois, Jane Turchyn of Batesville, Christopher Hersberger of Boulder, Colorado and Courtney Hersberger Copeland of Ft. Wayne, as well as two great granddaughters Anya and Lexi Copeland of Ft. Wayne. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ben graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1947, where he was senior class president and class valedictorian. He attended Muncie Business College and took some classes at Indiana University East. He was a combat infantryman in the Korean War, serving in Company F of the 23rd Regiment. Wounded on Heartbreak Ridge, he was awarded the Purple Heart. After being discharged from the Army he returned to civilian life, and was employed at Allen Chevrolet in Cambridge City. He later became in insurance agent, working at the Bogue Insurance Agency for C. R. Wonsetler. A few years later Ben Purchased the agency, retiring in 1989. Ben served on the Wayne County Council for 25 years, retiring in December of 2011 because of ill health. He was a former member of the Golay Center board, and the Cambridge City Public Library Board.
He greatly enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. Ben was a huge supporter of Western Wayne Schools both in athletics and academics. He served as timekeeper for Lincoln High School football and basketball teams for more than 25 years. He mentored Lincoln High School students, and was moderator of the Veterans Day program which is held each year at Lincoln High School. A life time Methodist, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cambridge City, serving the church in many ways. Ben loved life, his family, friends and community. He cheered for the Golden Eagles, the Colts, Chicago Bears and the Cincinnati Reds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jim, John, Jerald, Robert and Roy, his sister Janet Hersberger Eller, and niece Carol Ann Criss.
Calling will be at the Waskom Funeral Home on Friday, December 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. and the funeral will be held o Saturday, December 22, with calling at 12:00 followed with the service at 1:00 p.m. which will be conducted by Pastor Adriane Curtins, Father John Luerman. He will be buried in Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City.

Today (7/27/2013) is the 60th anniversary of the halting of the Korean Conflict. Ben was a member of Co. F of the 2nd Division (the Indian Head Division). The 2nd Division still has 17,000 soldiers stationed in Korea. Ben was wounded on September 13, 1951, during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He still had shrapnel in his knee when he passed away this last December. The doctors said it could not be removed. He was proud to have been a combat infantryman.
