Esther was the daughter of Aaron Curtis and Sally Bowker.

She married Alexander Brown, son of James Brown and Hannah Lamkin. Their fathers, James & Aaron, were part of the twelve first settlers of Stratford.

The History of Stratford, NH lists their children as Mercy, Miranda, Maria, and Harvey. Their first daughter was Roxana A. Brown, born in 1826 in Stratford. [One of her death certificates in Canaan, VT said her parents were Alex & Permelia Brown... which confuses the issue. The other death certificate just lists her father as Alex Brown. People list her mother as Permelia Stone, but Permelia Stone never married. Roxana married John P. Moore and is buried in Canaan Village. As far as I know there was not a 2nd Alexander Brown in Stratford having children in the 1820s.]

The only child I have absolutely verified so far, from birth to death, is Anna Maria, born Aug 1834 in Stratford, married Benjamin C. Josselyn in 1855, and died June 7, 1900 in Lawrence, MA where she is buried. Daughter Mercy (Mary) born 1829 in Stratford, married William Pitt Whitcomb in Nashville, NH (Nashua) in 1848; they had 4 or 5 children. By Feb 1860 she had moved to Oregon where her father was living and married Robert Swarbrick. They had 2 children. By 1870 they had moved to Oakland, CA where her husband died in 1894. I can't find her after his death... but do believe she died in CA. Her father moved to her home after his wife Caroline died in 1883 in Oakland, Oregon... then he died in Oakland, CA in 1884 and is buried there.

The 1830 census listed them with only 2 daughters, both in the "under 5" age group. One of them apparently died before the 1840 census. The 1840 census verifies that son Harvey R. was the son of Alexander & Esther, and that Esther had died by then. He was killed in the Civil War.

The stone is buried so I can't find the death date yet, but she died between 1837 and the 1840 census, when Alexander was listed with 3 children and no wife. The children were 1 male , under 5 (Harvey R); 1 female 5-9 (Anna Maria); 1 female 10-14 (Roxana A.).

She is buried her beside James and Hannah Brown.

Alexander married his sister-in-law, Caroline (Bishop) Brown [brother Samuel's 2nd wife], about 1840 and later moved to Oregon and California. He died in California in 1884.
