"On June 6, 1944, the 4th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach in Normandy, France. "The 8th Infantry Regiment, of which Sgt. Thomas was a member, claimed to be the first surface-borne troops (as opposed to parachutist air-dropped earlier) to hit the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Relieving the isolated 82nd Airborne Division, the 4th Infantry Division helped to clear the Cotentin peninsula and took part in the capture of Cherbourg on June 25."

Sergeant Lucian L. Thomas was killed in action in France on June 21, 1944. His remains were returned home in May 1948 aboard the U.S. Army Transport Lawrence Victory along with 113 other Georgians who had lost their lives in the European Theatre." Excerpts from Fold3.
