John William McCraney, the only child of Jessie Cary McCraney and Emma Louise Favors, was born and raised in Columbus, GA. He married India Lurline Hargett, of Harris County GA, in 1929. They had two children, Emma Helen and John William Jr. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and was trained at Ft Campbell KY before shipping to North Africa. Assigned to the 876th Airborne Engineers, he was wounded by shrapnel while piloting a glider during the Normandy Invasion.
