Painter, draughtsman, and etcher, who flourished during the golden age of Dutch painting, which saw the likes of Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and Johannes Vermeer. Some of his better works, roughly 120 drawings in ink and crayon, were locked away for years in Laurens van der Hem's Atlas, a prized possession of Vienna's National Library. He toured the Loire and Seine valleys in 1646 with fellow artist Lambert Doomer, during which tour he was prolific in his work. In July 1661 he left Amsterdam in the company of merchant shipowner Jaques Thierry, beginning a Grand Tour of England, France, Italy, Sicily, Malta, Germany, and Switzerland, returning to Amsterdam in August 1665. Two years after his return to Amsterdam, he married the widow of fellow artist Dancker Danckerts.
