Published: 2013-07-31 -

With his loving family by his side, Joseph Valentine Deringer passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 28, 2013 at the age of 94 and a half.

Joseph was born on the Billimun Farm near Mankota, SK on October 5, 1918, the fifth of nine children. He grew up on the family farm and took it over in 1941 when he married Piotta Kress from Kendal, SK.

Joseph and Piotta farmed at the homestead until 1958 and lived briefly in Regina before they purchased the hotel in Montmartre in 1963. In 1972, they returned to the house in Regina beside Holy Cross Church.

Dad excelled as a salesman at Sears and was well known and well liked. He was a people person. Religion was his way of life and he lived his faith every day. Dad administered Pastoral Care at the Regina General Hospital for 27 years, retiring from his volunteer work at the age of 90.

He was a devoted Roman Catholic, a mass server, communion minister, leader of the congregation, member of the Knights of Columbus and sang in many choirs throughout his life.

In 2005, Joseph and Piotta moved into Broadway Terrace. In February 2012 Dad took up residence at Spruce Lane Care Home.

Dad passed away at Lakeside Home in Wolseley, SK where family was able to be with him each day for the last six weeks of his life.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents; wife Piotta on January 18, 2011; and all his siblings.

Joseph will be remembered as a generous man who appreciated the care and kindness of everyone. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 315 Douglas Avenue East, Regina on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with the Very Rev. Jose Thomas Periyilkatte, V.F. presiding.
