MRS. EMMA LETTS DEAD.
Former Well-Known Marshalltown Girl Dies at Cherokee.
A telegram received by Mrs. Delano T. Smith this morning told of the death at the state hospital for the insane, at Cherokee, Friday night, of her stepdaughter. Mrs. Emma Letts, widow of the late N. M. Letts, who was a well known man of this city several years ago. Mrs. Letts' death was due to a complication of heart and kidney disease.
Mrs. Emma Letts was the daughter of the late Delano T. Smith. She was one of the prominent and very well known young women of this city of twenty years ago. She became the wife of Mr. Letts, who, with others, laid the foundation of what is now the Letts-Fletcher Company, in this city in 1886. Mr. and Mrs. Letts lived in this city, in Carroll, and later In New York and other places where Mr. Letts' business took him.
Mr. and Mrs. Letts were divorced in Chicago, where he died about five years ago. At about the same time Mrs. Letts was in this city, and showed marked symptoms of insanity. She was taken to Chicago, and from there was sent to the Cherokee hospital for treatment.
Mrs. Letts was 42 years of age, having been born here Nov. 6, 1867. She is survived by three children, Hazel, who has been adopted by her uncle, Dr. Chan Smith, of Mason City; Ned, who is attending preparatory school in Pennsylvania, and Delano, who Is living with a relative In Yates Center. Kan. In addition to the brother, Dr. Smith, there are three sisters, Mrs. E. E. Holmes, of Boone; Miss Maude Smith, of Colorado City. Colo., and Mrs. George Bender, of Denver, Colo. The stepmother, Mrs. D. T. Smith, one stepsister, Miss Marian Smith, and a stepbrother, Melville W. Smith, live in this city.
The body, accompanied by Dr. Chan Smith, will reach the city early Sunday morning. Funeral services, which are only for the relatives and more intimate friends, will be held from the Smith residence, 11 South Ninth street, at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. James Rayburn will officiate, and the body will be buried In the family lot at Riverside.
