Obituary

Herbert Martin Drewes, son of John and Christina (Lorenzen) Drewes, was born May 30, 1922 in Morris, Minnesota, where he grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church by Pastor Pilgrim. Following his schooling, Herb worked on the family farm before enlisting in the United States Navy in September of 1942. He served in WWII until January, 1946, when he received an honorable discharge. On February 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Darlene Lange at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Donnelly by Pastor Vagts. To this union five children were born. For the first ten years of marriage, Herb and Darlene lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Herb was employed at John Morrell Company. In 1952, they moved to Morris so Herb could help his sister on the family farm. In 1960, they moved into town, where Herb was employed by the Minnesota State Highway Department. He retied in June of 1987. In 1993, Herb and Darlene became snowbirds and would drive down to Mission, Texas for the winter months. They continued this trek for ten years, when they finally settled in Lowry in 2003. They stayed in Lowry until June of 2008, when Herb moved to West Wind Village in Morris, where he continued to live for the next 14 months. Herb and Darlene celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in February of this year.

Herb was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Morris and a life long member of the VFW. He was a very avid fisherman and enjoyed taking his family to the Northern part of the state, where they would rent a rustic cabin (complete with outhouse) for a week of fishing and swimming. Herb also enjoyed wood working and feeding and watching the birds. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Herb died on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 87 years.

He is survived by his wife: Darlene Drewes of Morris; five children: James (Ann Nygaard) Drewes of Lowry, Judith Hage of Andover, Jerald (Teresa Grotjohn) Drewes of Park Rapids, Jean (Adrian) Haabala of South Haven and Joel (Claire McNulty) Drewes of Longmont, CO; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandchild: Jeremy; his parents; five brothers: Chris, John, Carl, Otto and George and two sisters: Anna and Alma.
