Funeral Services for Dee Massey
Friends and acquaintances who had known him through the years were saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Russell Dee Massey at the Turner County Hospital on Saturday, May 11, at 5 a.m.
Mr. Massey, 55, had suffered a brief illness and had been admitted to the hospital 12 days earlier.
The funeral service was held Sunday, May 12, at 4 p.m. at the Charles V. Perry Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Cooper and the Rev. Clint Brown bringing comforting words to his bereaved family and friends. Mrs. Charles V. Perry sang"Beyond the Sunset" and "Where We'll Never Grow Old."
Mr. Massey was laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Rebecca, and the pallbearers were Richard Wheeler, Lowell (Bo) Joyner, Ernest E. Ellerbee, J. C. Forshee, James Ward, and J. B. Brown.
Born February 9, 1919, in Wilcox County, Mr. Massey came to Ashburn to make his home about 1956, and during the 18 years in which he lived here, he became well known to friends in all walks of life. He worked for a lengthy time for the City of Ashburn, and he was one of the city's best workers, dependable and accommodating at his job. In recent years, he had worked as a service station attendant. A quiet, hard working man, he was devoted to his family and loyal to his friends.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Overby Massey, his sons, Charlie Massey, Dee Wayne Massey, and Gary Massey, his daughter, Mrs. Judy Lacy; a brother Ernest Massey of Rebecca, and a sister, Mrs. E. P. Wilds of Waycross. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

Russell Massey was born to Tandy V. Massey and Levie Virginia Massey in Turner County, Georgia. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-1945. He married Addie Evelyn Overby in Turner County, Georgia, and she survives. Additional survivors include his children, Charlie Massey of Ashburn, Dee Wayne Massey of Fitzgerald, Gary Massey of Baconton, and Judy Lacey of Ocala, Fla.
