William F. DeMean, 83, passed away Monday, August 16, 1948, at his home in West Liberty.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18, at Snider Funeral Home in West Liberty, with Rev. Lester H. Bill officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa.

William Friedrich DeMean was born August 31, 1864, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Johann and Catharina (Reimers) DeMean. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1880 and settled on a farm in Muscatine County near West Liberty. He married Ulrike Catharina Mathilde "Minnie" Schneider on September 25, 1894, in Iowa City. Together they moved to a farm in Palo Alto County, until 1908 when they moved back to a farm near West Liberty and then retired to West Liberty.

Surviving are his wife, Minnie; four daughters, Anna (Walter) Osborn and Clara (John) Maher, both of Atalissa, Hazel (Harry) Grathwohl of Waterloo and Minnie (Harry) Jensen of Davenport; one son, William DeMean of West Liberty; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jensen and Dora Kurz, both of West Liberty; and four brothers, John DeMean, Peter (Stella) DeMean and Claus DeMean, all of West Liberty and George DeMean of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Harry and Gilbert DeMean, one sister, Helena DeMean and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte and Clara DeMean.
