Richard Leon Bruner, 84, of Waveland, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. He was born in Sterling, to Ray and Ical Pickett Bruner.

He graduated from Alamo High School in 1948, and Indiana State University in 1951, where he received his Master's degree in 1959. He was a retired school teacher and high school athletic coach, teaching for 38 years. He was a member of Indiana Retired Teachers, Montgomery County Retired Teachers and Browns Valley Christian Church. He taught Sunday school for many years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and veteran of the Korean War. In 1993 Richard received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from the state of Indiana.

He married Betty Jane Hoagland on June 25, 1950, near Lafayette. She survives him and resides in Waveland. Other survivors include three sons, Ronald R. (Kim) of Greenwood, Alan W. (Jackie) of Marshall and Jeffrey J. (Deanna) of Lebanon; two grandsons, Jonathan D. and Jeremy A. Bruner; three granddaughters, Crystal R., Danielle L. and Tiffany N. Bruner; and one great granddaughter, Mia Bruner.

Visitation is 4 to 8 on Monday, July 29, at Machledt & Servies Funeral Home, Waveland. Funeral services will b held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday July 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Wallace Lutheran Cemetery, with Rev. David Finch officiating.

Memorials may be made to Browns Valley Christian Church or the Salvation Army.
