Ripley Township Resident Ends His Life by Hanging
Services were held this morning at Carthage for Henry Whitaker, 91-year-old Ripley township resident who took his life Thursday afternoon.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 o’clock from the Thompson Funeral home in Carthage with the Rev. DeWitt Foster officiating. Interment took place in Asbury cemetery, Morristown.
Dr. R. O. Kennedy, count coroner, reported that Whitaker committed suicide by hanging himself in a barn on his farm, 2 ½ miles west of Carthage. About 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
Whitaker resided with Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, tenants on his farm. The body was found by Mrs. Smith.
Despondency was believed responsible for the suicide act. The elderly man was said to have brooded over impending court proceedings to have a guardian appointed for him.
The deceased was born September 24, 1853, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whitaker. He formerly resided in the Morristown-Gwynneville community.
He leaves a brother, Elbert Whitaker of near Morristown; a sister, Mrs. Cinderella Ridlin of near Carthage; three grandsons, the Rev. Truman Whitaker of New York, Lloyd Whitaker of La Porte and Loren Whitaker of New Castle; and three great grandchildren.
