Following a critical illness of ten days duration, J.B. (Uncle Bass) Gauntt, 76, life-long resident of Henderson county and one of the county's best known citizens, died at his home on North Prairieville street at 10:45 o'clock Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at the city cemetery. Rev. Nimmo Goldston, pastor of the Christian church, was in charge with the local Masons conducting a final service at the grave. Jack Owen presided and delivered the Masonic burial oration. Prior to the Masonic service Senator J.J. Faulk eulogized the life of the deceased.

Pallbearers were: Clark Murrell, Adrian Ford, C.M. Weekly, J.W. Walker, W.W. Dean and A.J. Wright.

James Bazel Gauntt was a native of Henderson county, having been born at the old Gauntt homestead near New York, this county, on November 16, 1855. He was the son of the late John W. Gauntt, one of the early pioneers of this county who moved with his parents from Georgia in 1850. The Gauntt family settled at the old town of Fincastle, lived there two years and then moved three miles South of the old town of New York and established what is now known as the old Gauntt homestead. His father died in 1912 at the age of 83. About forty years ago J. B. Gauntt and his family removed to a farm near Athens.

J.B. Gauntt was married to Miss Victoria Neill on December 21, 1879. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom are now living. Mrs. Gauntt died October 19, 1929. The seven children are four sons, Paul Gauntt, Athens; A.M. Gauntt, Kansas City; John N. Gauntt, Waco; Smith Gauntt, Dallas; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Mae Bass, Athens; Mrs. E.O. Hall, Dallas; Mrs. H.O. Browning, Athens.

Two brothers, Bob Gauntt of Athens and Dee Gauntt of LaRue also survive. The deceased also has one sister, Mrs. Mattie Bell of Tyler, living. Other survivors include twenty-five grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

J.B. Gauntt was known as an excellent citizen. He had long been active in community affairs in the county. He early allied himself with the Baptist church. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for more than forty-five years.
