Joseph Dana was educated at Dartmouth College and studied law and served in the Massachusetts legislature prior to migrating to Athens in 1817. Dana pursued the law off and on, serving as Athens County prosecuting attorney, 1817-20. He also trained several of Athens lawyers. But his principal occupation was as a professor of foreign language at Ohio University. When the office of mayor was created in 1828, Dana was elected to village council and chosen mayor, holding office 1828-32.
