Martha was the daughter of Charles Washburn Williams and his wife Mary Love Tenney. She and her older brother, Tenney Davis, grew up in San Jose.
She attended public schools, prepared for college at the Washburne School, and went through Vassar College with considerable distinction. She was prominent in the dramatic and musical activities of the institution, and was chosen leader of the famous "daisy chain". She graduated in 1908.
Martha's engagement to Churchill Humphrey, U. S. N. of Louisville, Kentucky was announced in the San Jose Evening News on February 18, 1909. The following appeared in the Springfield Republican Saturday, March 6, 1909. "Ensign Churchill Humphrey, United States Navy, who made the trip around the world on the flagship Connecticut, was married in San Jose, Ca. , Thursday night to Miss Martha Williams. Churchill reached San Jose only a few hours before the ceremony, after a flying trip across the continent, and with his bride he started East yesterday, to join his ship".
Martha and Churchill had two children, Mary Moss (born 1910) and Alexander P. Humphrey (born 1911).
