KERRVILLE - Alva Kolb Jr., 87, of Kerrville, passed from this life at his home on Monday, Jan. 2, 2011.

Born in Grapeland, Texas, on Oct. 27, 1923, he was the son of Alva Kolb Sr. and Ruby Helm Kolb. Al was a dedicated family man who enjoyed his last eight years in Kerrville after spending many happy years in Frankston, Texas.

He enjoyed hard work, serving his family, his friends, his community and his Lord. A gifted man, he was a farmer, gardener, electrician, musician and a grand storyteller.

Al was dedicated to serving his country proudly and loved to tell stories of his service during World War II, where he flew 47 combat missions with the 38th Bomb Group in Mitchell B-25 bombers in the Pacific from the Philippines, New Guinea, and finally on bombing raids over Japan.

He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, Adolph Kolb.

A gentle man, he was a devoted husband, marrying Vonceil Sumerlin on Jan. 17, 1947.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Vonceil Kolb of Kerrville; his daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Dean Mitchell of Leakey and Stacey and Carlton Pierce of Conroe; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Reeves Kolb of Crockett.

There will be no visitation.

A celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in the main chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home with full military honors.

Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at Kerrville Funeral Home.
