Ira Columbus Jones was born to parents John A. Jones and Elizabeth McCollum, in Georgia, February 4, 1867. Both of his parents were born in Georgia as well. The census of 1870 has the family living in Broomtown, Chattooga County, Georgia. By the census of 1880, Ira is seen living with his parents and siblings in Fractional Township, Cherokee County, Alabama. He was 13 years old and working as a farm laborer having completed only his third year of elementary school.
Ira married Rindie E. Dacus in Hamilton County, Tennessee, on January 3, 1898. The census of 1900 finds Ira and Rindie still in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Ira's younger brother, Alfred, and Rindie's younger sister, Maggie, are living with them at this time.
Ira and Rindie had a son, Thomas Alvin Jones, May 18, 1909. A photograph was taken of the family at their home in Mentone, Alabama in 1910. According to the census of 1910, Ira was a farmer.
Rindie passed away from influenza complicated by pneumonia January 23, 1919, in East Lake, Hamilton County, Tennessee. She was buried in Mission Ridge Cemetery in Rossville, Georgia.
The 1920 census shows Ira with two more children, Bessie Lee, born around 1914, and Melvin, born about June 1918. They are living in Paden District, Cherokee County, Alabama and Ira is a farmer at this time too.
In 1923, Ira signed the death certificate of his brother, Samuel "Simms" M. Jones (b.3/27/1852). He died January 21, 1923, from pneumonia. He was buried in Lafayette, Georgia, on January 22, 1923.
By the 1930 census, Ira was living in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee and had married again to Ida Gatlin (b.10/24/1887, d.7/1/1942). He is a carpenter at this time and they have three boarders living in the home. All three children are still living in the home as well.
The census of 1940 shows Ira then had three granddaughters from his oldest son, Thomas, and his wife, Violet Jessie O'Neal (b.1/23/1913, d.5/17/1997). They are Billie M. (b.abt 1934), Edna Louise (b.1/15/1938, d.3/26/2007), and Shirley Ann (b.11/27/1939, d.6/3/1985). Thomas's family lived next door to Ira. Ira is 73 years old at this time. Willis Gatlin, likely a relation to Ida, is lodging with them in 1940, and is working as a threader in a mill.
In 1942 Ira had another granddaughter, Mary Lee Jones (b.4/28/1942, d.5/23/2001). This year he also buried his second wife, Ida. She passed away July 1, 1942, from toxemia caused by a skin condition (pemphigus vulgarus). Though they were living in Chattanooga, Tennessee when she died, she was buried in Big Springs Cemetery near Valley Head, Alabama.
In 1947, Ira's fifth granddaughter by eldest son, Thomas, was born, Wanda Gail Jones (living). Later his sixth granddaughter by Thomas is born, Sarah Elizabeth Jones (living).
Ira Columbus Jones passed away October 4, 1950, at the age of 83 years old in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from hypertensive heart disease. His son, Thomas Alvin Jones was the informant on the death certificate. Ira was buried in Head Springs Cemetery in Valley Head, Alabama.
