Fiercely protective of her children as witnessed by her actions after receiving notice in February 1918 that her son was dying of meningitis in a WWI training camp. She was allowed 15 minutes at the camp hospital for good-bys, but when the time was up she refused to leave, noting that it was a quarantined area. She stayed and nursed him back to an acceptable level.
Martha Russell died of stomach cancer.
