Reuben fought in the War of 1812 in Capt. Zachariah Smith's Company of Infantry, 1st Regiment Georgia Militia under the command of Brigadeer General John Floyd. He enlisted August 10, 1813 in Elbert County, Georgia. He was wounded in action and drew a pension from the U.S.. He fought in the Battle of Colby Swamp.

He moved his family from Elbert County, Georgia to Alabama in the present day Pleasant Grove area in 1833. He received a land patent of 80.2 acres of land on September 20, 1839. It is not known if he purchased the land or if it was given to him for serving in the War of 1812.
