Carl Adolph Eduard Boertmann was born in Muenden, Kingdom of Hanover before the unification of Germany. Parents: Carl Christian and Rosine Frederika Marshalk Boertmann. Immigrated to the States alone in 1846. He returned to Hanover, married Caroline Louise Goetze and together they arrived in New York City in September of 1850. They relocated to Detroit c. 1851, and Saginaw, c. 1858. Adolph was a carpenter/cabinet maker for the Pere Marquette Railroad.

The children of Adolph and Caroline Goetze Boertmann were:
1. Sophie Friederike Boertmann, 1851-1880, Never married.
2. Albert Eduard, 1852-1906; m. first: Emma Wilms (1857-1876); m. second: Phoebe Collins (1860-1910).
3. Rudolph Louis, 1854-1929; m. Franziska Caroline Gutekunst (1858-1908).
4. Carl Christian "Charles", 1855-1892; m. Elisabeth Friederike Josenhans (1861-1933).
5. Louisa, 1859-1913; m. Robert Rudolph Steiner (1857-1913).

It is believed that all Boertmans living in the United States are descended from this Adolph Boertman. Most, but not all, members of the family dropped the final "n" in the name, but whether they spell the name Boertmann or Boertman, they are all members of this extended family.
