Her father George was a Regular Army veteran of the Civil War (6th US Cav). When Sadie was only a year old her mother Annie died from tuberculosis and George broke up the household due to his own failing health- a war wound would claim his life in the veteran home in Erie, PA not many years later. Sadie lived with uncles and aunts, and was also raised by a young girl who followed her from the Knarr household. This girl, Becky Miller, stayed in the family's life all Sadie's life and on into the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Sadie married Thomas A. Walton, the son of another veteran, and a railroad man. They had 3 children, Stewart, Merle, and Blanche, but had the heartbreak of losing Merle as a toddler. Thomas had gone briefly to Panama at one point, where he picked up the strain of malaria which took his life 10 years later.
Blanche grew up to be a nurse, Stew owned a sign shop. Her husband died young also, leaving her alone. Her grandson Bill got her whole attention later, he remembered a well-dressed, intimidating lady who always got her way and never, ever gave up.
Her marriage record shows her birthdate as Dec 26, 1879 while her death certificate lists it as Sep 22, 1878.
