Born Heinrich Christoph Battermann, son of Johann Christoph Battermann and Dorothea Winkelmann, Henry came in the mid 1850s from Hannover province to the Chicago area with his parents and at least 5 siblings. He married Louisa Balgemann 8 Aug 1873 in Cook County IL. They were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proviso Twp. (Hillside IL). Nine children were born to this marriage in Illinois. Louisa died in 1893 and is buried in the Immanuel Cemetery at Hillside IL. Widowed, Henry came with children to Rolling Green in Martin Co. where he lived in 1895 with his sister and family, the Wilhelm Brinkmans. He married widow Augusta Meyer Marquart and lived in Fairmont, working as a carpenter. They had 2 children, Albert and Augusta. The 1937 photo was taken during a return visit to the Hillside IL home church and shows Henry with his 6 living children by his first wife, all of whom lived in Illinois or the Pacific Northwest.
