J. V. Williams is listed on the 1860 Kansas Territory census in Ottumwa Township of Coffey County as age 31. He is listed with "N. E." Williams, a female, age 18. The 1865 Ottumwa, Coffey, Kansas census lists J. V. Williams as a soldier in Co. F, 12th Regiment. He is listed as married, but is listed with a family named McDaniel. The 1865 census page is dated May 19, 1865.

J. V. William enlisted in the 12th Kansas Infantry in September of 1862 at Ottumwa, Coffey County, Kansas. He recorded his age as 32 and also his birthplace as Randolph County, North Carolina. (Kansas Civil War enlistment record)

J. V. Williams appears on a 1962 listing of veterans who are buried in Coffey County, Kansas. He is shown in the Adgate Cemetery with about a dozen other veterans. This cemetery is also shown as Hickory Creek Cemetery with the notation that it was to be relocated because of the John Redmond Dam & Reservoir being constructed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
