Lewis came to Bell County, Texas between 1852 and 1855. He is listed in the book History of Bell County written by George W. Tyler in 1936. Lewis and his brother James Alexander settled in Bell County, Texas about 1850 and settled on opposite sides of the Leon River. These men were the sons of James William Grimes who was the son of William Grimes, Sr. and Millie Ricketts.
Lewis Peyton Grimes was born in Maury County, Tennessee. Louisa Jane "Jennie" Grimes was his daughter by his first wife, Amanda Caroline Hilliard. They are buried at the Moffatt Cemetery in Bell County. Lewis served as a lieutenant for the Confederacy on the Arkansas/Louisiana front during the Civil War. His father, James W. Grimes, served with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.

Lewis was the husband of (1) Amanda Caroline Hilliard and (2) Sarah Ann Huchingson.
