Professional baseball player and coach. He played for 25 years with the Chicago Cubs Organization starting in 1948 batting .270 in his first year of professional baseball. He hit a home run off the famous "Bobo" Newsome. He spent two years in the US military where he attained the rank of sergeant. He had a batting average of .321 in 1957 where he was a player/manager. He had 20 home runs and batted in 80 runs. He was one of the youngest coaches in baseball history, becoming a staff member of the Chicago Cubs in 1961 where he coached for ten years. After his death from leukemia, the Cubs established the Verlon "Rube" Walker Leukemia Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which is now the Rube Walker Blood Center.
