Charles I. Smith, 73, Armstrong banker for the past 25 years, died at 1 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Holy Family hospital at Estherville. Death followed a stroke which he suffered at his home Saturday. He also had a light stroke last summer. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Presbyterian church at Armstrong. Rev. James Rowe officiated and burial was at Grove cemetery, Armstrong.
Charles Irving Smith was born Jan. 24, 1886 at Agenda, Kansas. He was educated in the Sabatha, Kansas, schools and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1914. He was married to Eunice Robinson Aug. 24, 1909 at Sabatha. He was school superintendent at two Kansas towns. He later served as president of a bank at Highland, Kan. and then was field service manager for a Kansas life insurance company. Mr. Smith moved to Armstrong in 1935 and was president of the First Trust and Savings bank until 1956 when he was named vice president. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dak E. Hansen, Armstrong; and Mrs. Thomas B. Patton, Birmingham Ala.; five grandchildren, a sister and five brothers. (The Algona Upper Des Moines, Algona, Iowa, November 26, 1959)
