Buford Bird was born circa 1780, in Virginia, to Philemon Bird Sr. and Mary Lee Bird. His family later relocated to Wilkes County, Georgia.

Buford married Polly Keeling on January 4, 1806, in Wilkes County. To this union was born ten known children - Mary Catherine (Harband), George Lee, Gustavus H., Matilda (Lane), Philemon, Elisha, Frances Elizabeth (Ware), Buford Jr., Wiley, and Mary Catherine (yes, a second Mary Catherine).

Buford Bird was one of the fist five appointed commissions for Tailaferro County, when the county first formed in 1825. He was a wealthy planter, and influential in local politics.

Buford's exact date of death is unknown; however, his Last Will and Testament was settled in court in Crawfordville, Georgia (Taliaferro County), on November 7, 1853, and had been penned only few months earlier in July, leaving one to assume that his death occurred between July and November of that year.
