The oldest child and only son of John Quincy Shumate and Louise Elizabeth McLean. He married Pauline Prather Nov. 9, 1900 in Newbern Tennessee. He and Pauline appear frequently in period Kentucky newspapers. They were active socially, he was the Master at the local Mason's lodge and she enjoyed euchre and was a member of many clubs such as the Embroidery Club. Like so many of his relatives, Porter became a cashier at the Bank of Hickman. He also engaged in local politics and was elected several years to the Hickman City Council. He was also elected to serve on the Hickman Levee Board. In 1912, he resigned from the bank and moved to New Mexico due to health reasons. It was about this time that he and Pauline divorced. September 19 1913, he married Mary Ethel Martindell in Riverside California. He and Mary lived a couple of years in Temecula where, in 1913 he was one of the principal promoters and planner of the Citizen's Bank of Temecula as it was called in 1913.

Although he was married twice, he had no children. Porter died August 8 1918, his wife Mary is the name of record at the cemetery. She handled all of the cemetery arrangements. Mary Ethel Shumate married Irvine Alfred Loughead Oct 2, 1919 in Los Angeles, California.
