Demaris Francis "Fannie" Rains Smith was the daughter of John L and Cynthia Nelson Rains. She married Samuel Smith, a civil war veteran and son of Sarah Smith.

She was born in Pulaski County, Virginia according to her marriage record. She died between Aug 1870, where she was listed in the census at 26 years old and 1874, when her widowed husband remarried.

She is placed in the Preston Cemetery because it is where her husband Samuel Smith and daughter Sarah Smith Barker are buried. Also her sister Mary E Rains Farra and several members of Mary's family are buried here. The Farra homestead was once part of this cemetery location, and the Rains and Farra families all lived in the Dunlow area.

I was unable to find her stone myself on my last trip to Dunlow. It is likely one of several worn away rocks near her husband's grave. He also has a worn rock for a marker, but a military headstone was installed on his grave later to identify it further.
