In 1927, Ruth was working as a bookkeeper for H. M. Knox in Garden City, Kansas. She was living at 509 North 9th Street at that time. She was later hired as bookkeeper for Yockey's Grocery Store in Garden City, around 1928. There she met Ernest "Bill" Dufrin and they were married that following year on 20 Aug 1929. Ernest was the son of Edward Carry Dufrin and Malinda Landry. Two sons were born to their marriage, Jack and William Dufrain.
