VILLAGE YOUTH KILLED IN NAVY AIRPLANE CRASH
Alex M. Abler, Mt. Calvary, Dies in Performance of Duty, Mother Told
Alex M. Abler, 26, Mt. Calvary, aviation radio man third class, U.S. naval reserve, was killed Monday in an airplane crash while in the performance of his duty in the service of his country, his mother, Mrs. Matt N. Abler of that village, was informed in a message from the war department.
No further details were given in the telegram.
The death of the youth was the first war casualty to come to the Village of Mt. Calvary and the first to Holy Cross church parish, which he had always attended. A requiem mass for him will be celebrated in the church at 9 a.m. Friday.
Born April 5, 1917 in Mt. Calvary, Alex attended parochial and junior high school in the village. Enrolling in CCC services in 1935, he served in that connection for five years. After his CCC service and work with the Central State nursery in Wisconsin Rapids, he completed a CAA flying course at Sparta.
He joined the U.S.N.R. on Nov. 7, 1941, and had served in Virginia and California, prior to going to his last station, Quoinset Point, R.I. He specialized as a weather observer.
Besides his mother the youth leaves 10 brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ernest Mertens, Mrs. Edmund Wagner and Genevieve of this city, Patricia at home, Herbert of Sturgeon Bay, Ambrose and Ralph of Milwaukee, Pvt. Lawrence Abler of New Jersey, Harold of this city and Norman at home.
His father died March 29, 1941, and a sister, Mrs. Alex Casper, expired Feb. 27, 1940.
