BOONE Dr. Richard D. Callahan passed away on June 14, 2013 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born on October 19, 1952 in Lock Haven, PA to Dr. Paul Richard Callahan and Lois Joyce Callahan. Richard graduated from Penn State University and Penn State Hershey College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and oncology fellowship at Wake Forest University. He practiced as a hematologist and oncologist in Asheville, NC. Richard received a history degree From UNC-Asheville after retiring from medical practice and taught history at Caldwell Community College. He was a published historian, writing on military history and effects of disease in history. Richard was preceded in death by his son, Byron Richard Callahan and his father, Paul Richard Callahan. Richard is survived by his daughter Katie Callahan Neginskiy of Chicago, IL and his mother Lois Callahan of North Cape May, NJ and his brother, Michael Callahan of St. Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Watauga County Humane Society at P.O. Box 1835, Boone, NC 28607.
